NMC's seat matrix for 2026-27 lists 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 colleges, excluding the INIs such as AIIMS and JIPMER, of which 63,296 are government seats. NTA registered 22.79 lakh candidates for NEET UG 2026. Private college fees run from about ₹60 lakh to ₹1.5 crore for the full course, indicative only — the binding figure is the fee notified by each state Fee Regulatory Committee. • ›Government-subsidised fees: annual tuition at the standard tier runs roughly ₹2.2 to ₹7 lakh, against ₹60 lakh to ₹1.5 crore for the whole course at a private Indian college. Fees are paid directly to the university.
• ›What the international routes check: for the US route, ECFMG Certification needs a Sponsor Note on the school's WDOMS entry covering your graduation year, and the UK's GMC needs a WDOMS entry but also checks the qualification itself and assesses some Russian universities case by case; for India the degree must meet the FMGL-2021 criteria and you must clear the FMGE. Note what these words do not mean: NMC approves no foreign university, WHO accredits no medical school, and FAIMER co-runs the WDOMS directory rather than approving anything.
• ›English-medium instruction, no IELTS or TOEFL needed: several universities Indian students choose, including Kazan, Bashkir, Sechenov and Volgograd, list an English track in their own documents. FMGL-2021 asks for a degree "with medium of instructions in English", and NMC has not ruled on courses taught partly in Russian, so get the medium for every year, including clinical rotations, in writing. MBBS Course Duration & Curriculum Structure in Russia

The MBBS program in Russia spans 6 years across 12 semesters. Russia's federal standard for General Medicine (FGOS 31.05.01) builds clinical practice into those 6 years and names no separate internship year. Each university writes its own curriculum. The table below follows three curricula published for the 2026 intake (Kazan SMU's plan for its English-language group, Bashkir SMU's general plan and Rostov SMU's plan for its intermediary-language group) and puts each subject in the year where at least two of the three teach it. Timing differs: of the 46 Russian universities whose curricula or course descriptions we read (see our year-by-year MBBS syllabus in Russia), 17 start the introductory internal-medicine course in Year 2, and some universities schedule patient-care practice earlier: Volgograd's 2026 curriculum, for one, has an introductory practice in internal medicine and one in surgery in semester 1.

Eligibility Criteria for MBBS in Russia — Indian Students 2026

• ›Academic qualification: Minimum 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) in Class 12th from a recognised board. 40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates, and 45% for general-category candidates with a benchmark disability.
• ›NEET mandatory: Valid NEET UG scorecard is compulsory for anyone admitted abroad from May 2018 onwards. NEET score is valid for 3 years for abroad admissions. Without NEET, you cannot appear for FMGE or NExT after graduation.
• ›Age requirement: Minimum 17 years as of 31st December of the admission year. No strict upper age limit at most Russian universities.
• ›Valid passport: For a Russian study visa, valid at least 1.5 years from the date the visa starts, with at least 2 blank pages (Russian Government Decree 335).
• ›No IELTS or TOEFL: not required by Russian medical universities for Indian students, though some check your English themselves, as Kazan and Volgograd do.
• ›An FMGL-2021 compliant course: the course you enrol on must meet the FMGL-2021 criteria — 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium, and a qualification licensing you to practise in that country — and the university must be listed in WDOMS. Compliance attaches to the degree, not the school, so verify it for the specific course before paying any fee.

Step-by-Step Admission Process for MBBS in Russia

• ›Step 1 — Shortlist universities: compare on FMGE pass rate, annual fees, city, hostel quality, hospital affiliation and Indian student community, and check that the course meets the FMGL-2021 criteria. Verify the WDOMS listing independently.
• ›Step 2 — Submit provisional application (Jan–Mar 2027): Fill the application form with Class 10/12 marksheets, passport copy, photographs, and NEET scorecard. Apply before NEET results — provisional applications are accepted.
• ›Step 3 — Receive admission / offer letter: University reviews your application and issues a conditional admission letter. This is not the final document — it is a holding confirmation.
• ›Step 4 — Submit NEET scorecard & get final admission letter: NTA has not announced the NEET (UG) 2027 date yet. Once the results are declared, submit your scorecard immediately. A NEET result stays valid for three years, so if you qualified NEET 2025 or NEET 2026 you can submit that scorecard without waiting for NEET 2027. The university issues the Final Admission Letter — required for visa processing.
• ›Step 5 — Receive official invitation letter (Jun–Aug 2027): The university applies to Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), which issues the official study invitation, the main document for your student visa application. We found no official processing time for the invitation; Sechenov quotes 21 working days for its own.
• ›Step 6 — Apply for Russian student visa: The official list for a study visa is your passport, the application form, two 3.5 × 4.5 cm photos, the fee, the original MVD invitation and an HIV-absence certificate in English. The Embassy's tariff lists a standard student visa issued within 4–20 working days and an urgent one within 3 working days, and a decision can take up to 30 days if the application needs further checks, so apply as soon as the invitation arrives. • ›Step 7 — Pay first-year tuition & travel to Russia (Aug 2027): Pay tuition directly to the university. Book flights, arrange forex and medical insurance valid in Russia, and prepare for pre-departure orientation.
• ›Step 8 — University registration & classes begin (Sep–Oct 2027): On arrival, check in to the hostel, sign the university and hostel contracts and hand over your passport for migration registration: the law allows 7 working days from arrival, and universities set shorter deadlines. The medical examination is due within 30 days of entry (since 1 September 2026) and fingerprinting within 90 days. Then sort out the visa extension, a SIM card and insurance.

Compliance is decided per degree against the FMGL-2021 criteria, not per university by any authority, so treat the list below as where students commonly go rather than as a clearance. • ›Hostel facilities: Facilities differ by university. An undated Indian Embassy page on living conditions warns that hostels at many universities could be inadequate and says students are generally expected to cook their own food, so ask the university in writing about rooms, kitchens, entry control, security staff and visitor rules before you pay.
• ›Indian food: Do not count on it inside the university: the Indian Embassy's page on living conditions says Indian food is not available in the universities. Ask current students which Indian shops and restaurants your city has.
• ›Climate: Winters are long and cold in cities like Perm, Orenburg and Kazan, so pack for real cold and ask current students what you need. Stavropol, in southern Russia, has a milder climate.
• ›Safety: Read the Indian Embassy's advisories before you choose a city. Its advisory of 14 August 2024 asked Indian nationals to temporarily relocate outside the Bryansk, Belgorod and Kursk regions, and we found nothing withdrawing it when we checked on 18 October 2026. • ›Practice in India — clear FMGE or NExT: A Russian graduate must clear the FMGE to register as a doctor in India; our FMGE exam guide has the session dates and rules. NExT is deferred and no start date has been notified. Russian university graduates recorded 3,331 passes from 11,276 candidates in the NBEMS 2024 report, which is 29.54%, and individual universities range from single digits to well above that — read the per-university figures rather than a national band. Start FMGE prep from Year 1.
• ›Postgraduate studies in India — NEET-PG today: the PG route for a foreign graduate is to clear FMGE, register with NMC or a State Medical Council, and complete the 12-month internship in India or be due to finish it by that year's cut-off (30 September 2026 for NEET-PG 2026), then sit NEET-PG. NExT has not replaced FMGE. NMC public notice No.Cdn.19012/15/2022/Coord-NMC of 13 July 2023 deferred the National Exit Test on the Health Ministry's advice until further directions, that deferral has not been lifted, and NMC's What's New list shows no NExT notice after 8 February 2024 (checked 18 October 2026). Plan for FMGE and treat any specific NExT start year you see as a guess.
• ›Practice in USA — USMLE: It depends on your university, not on Russia. USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK are open to students and graduates of a school that WDOMS lists as meeting ECFMG's eligibility requirements. ECFMG Certification needs a Sponsor Note on that school's WDOMS entry covering your graduation year, and Step 3 needs ECFMG Certification first.
• ›Practice in UK — PLAB: The GMC must first accept your qualification. A WDOMS entry is required but not enough on its own, and the GMC assesses some Russian universities case by case. Then pass PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 and apply for registration with a licence to practise.
• ›Practice in the UAE or Saudi Arabia: the UAE's three regulators, the DHA, DOH Abu Dhabi (formerly HAAD) and MOHAP, license doctors under shared rules that ask for your qualification, experience, a licence from your home country, good standing, an assessment and primary source verification.
