Kalmyk State University MBBS: What You Can Verify, and What Nobody Can

Kalmyk State University in Elista is one of the most heavily promoted new MBBS destinations in the agent pages we reviewed this August. Search it and the results are a wall of agent pages saying the same things: recognised, approved, low fees, bright future. Almost none of it comes with a source. We spent a day pulling the primary documents, and this is what survives contact with them.

Start with the name, because even that gets rewritten

The university's entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools reads: Kalmyk State University named after B.B. Gorodovikov, FAIMER SCHOOL ID F0009952, Elista, currently operational. Notice what is missing. There is no "Medical" in the name. This is a classical state university, the main one of the Republic of Kalmykia, and its medical program is one part of it. Plenty of Indian sites write "Kalmyk State Medical University" because it sells better. The directory says otherwise.

The official website is kalmgu.ru, with an English section. The lookalike domains you will meet in search results, kalmsu.com and kalmsu.ru, are agent-run recruitment sites; kalmsu.com presents itself as the university's "Official Website" in its social-sharing metadata and calls the program "NMC-approved" in its page text. Keep the two categories separate in your head: kalmgu.ru is the university, everything else is somebody selling you the university. For transparency, our own university page still sits at a legacy URL containing "medical", which the directory name does not have; the page content uses the correct name.

The FMGE record: there is none, and that is the honest headline

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences publishes institute-wise FMGE results for every foreign university whose graduates sit the exam. We downloaded the 2024 report and searched it for Kalmyk, for Elista, and for Gorodovikov. Zero results. The university does not appear, in any spelling.

The reason is simple arithmetic, and the marketing supplies it themselves. The agency that markets Kalmyk to Indian students celebrated its first-ever MBBS batch departing in 2025, on its own website. A six-year course that begins in 2025 graduates in 2031. So the first meaningful FMGE results for Kalmyk-trained students arrive around 2031 or 2032, and a proper cohort-sized record takes a few years more.

Hold that against what you will read elsewhere. Any page quoting an FMGE percentage for Kalmyk State University today has invented it, full stop. There is no data to be right or wrong about. When the first real numbers appear in an NBEMS report, they will show up in our FMGE dataset with their denominators, and this paragraph will be updated to say so.

"Recognised by NMC" is a claim about a list that does not exist

Several pages promoting Kalmyk state flatly that the university is recognised or approved by the National Medical Commission of India. One recruitment blog even carries "NMC-Approved" in its URL. The problem is upstream of Kalmyk: NMC approves no foreign university. Its own study-abroad page says it does not endorse any list of foreign medical institutions. The approved list people half-remember belonged to MCI, which was wound up in 2020 and never replaced. What actually decides whether a Kalmyk degree works in India is the FMGL-2021 checklist: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium throughout, and a qualification that licenses you to practise in Russia. Those are things you can demand in writing from the university before paying anyone. For a new program, the internship point deserves special attention: ask exactly where and how the final-year internship runs, because "at the same institution" is a regulatory requirement, not a detail.

The fee, from the university's own order

Russian state universities set tuition by signed public order, and Kalmyk's latest is order No. 703-o/d dated 14.04.2026 on kalmgu.ru. For 2026-27 it prices the first year of English-medium General Medicine at 206,000 roubles, second and later years at 190,000 roubles, and the Russian-medium first year at 163,800 roubles. At August 2026 exchange rates, 206,000 roubles is about $2,460.

Compare that with the package numbers in circulation: the same agency's pages carry course-package figures several times higher, and they do not agree with each other from one page to the next. We are not reprinting those numbers here because we could not pin them to a stable URL, and a figure you cannot go and check is worth nothing. What we can put a document behind is the tuition: at the order-backed rates, roughly $13,800 across six years at August 2026 exchange rates. Some of every gap is genuinely explainable, since packages bundle hostel, food, insurance and the agency's own services. But an explainable gap is still a gap you should see itemised before you pay. Ask anyone quoting you a dollar figure to show the order behind it, then ask what the difference buys. Hostel claims for Kalmyk vary between agent pages too, so get the housing cost in writing as well. How to decide on a university with no track record

No record is an unknown, which is different from bad. It cuts both ways: nobody can show you Kalmyk failures, and nobody can show you Kalmyk successes. The cheapest order-backed tuition among the Russian universities we track is a real advantage. The question is what you are giving up for it, and the honest answer is: certainty.

So price the uncertainty. Orenburg State Medical University, roughly a thousand kilometres away across the steppe, has a published record of 695 passes on 1,839 candidates since 2019, most recently 140 of 309 (45.31%) in the December 2025 session, and its own order prices year one at 422,380 roubles. Kalmyk costs roughly half and offers no record at all. If that trade reads as fair to you with both numbers on the table, it is a legitimate choice.
