MBBS in Poland is a 6-year, 12-semester English-taught MD programme at WDOMS-listed universities. Indian students need a valid NEET qualifying scorecard, 50% PCB, and English proficiency. Expect to need an English certificate (IELTS 6.5 at Warsaw and Poznan, B2 at Lublin). Each university publishes its own fee, in EUR, PLN or USD. The degree is built to the training minimum of EU Directive 2005/36/EC, but the Directive's automatic recognition applies to EU nationals; an Indian citizen goes through each country's own procedure. EU Medical Degree - and What EU Recognition Covers
A Polish medical degree is an EU qualification, built to the training minimum in EU Directive 2005/36/EC. The Directive's automatic recognition, though, applies to nationals of EU member states (Article 2(1)). An Indian citizen with a Polish degree is not covered automatically: each EU country runs its own procedure for qualifications held by non-EU nationals, so check with the medical regulator of the country you are aiming for.
USMLE Route Open
ECFMG approves no school. Polish graduates can sit USMLE Steps 1, 2 CK and 3 where the university's WDOMS record carries an ECFMG sponsor note - check the record for each university you shortlist.
Jagiellonian University - Founded 1364
Jagiellonian University in Krakow was founded on 12 May 1364, and its own history page describes it as the oldest higher education institution in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. Medicine was one of its three founding faculties. Its medical college runs a School of Medicine in English.
Schengen Area - Short Trips Without Extra Visas
Poland is in the Schengen Area, which the European Commission counts at 29 countries. A valid Polish residence permit lets you make short trips to the other 28 - France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and more - for conferences or travel, without a separate visa.
WDOMS-listed - Where the India, UK and US Routes Start
All six universities on this page are WDOMS-listed. That is where each route starts, not where it ends. India checks the degree itself against NMC's FMGL-2021 criteria; graduates then return through the FMGE - the route until the National Exit Test comes into force, and no NExT date has been notified - and a 12-month internship in India. The UK (PLAB) and USA (USMLE) check the university separately.
An Indian Community + English-Medium Curriculum
About 5,000 Indian students are studying at Polish universities across all subjects, by the Ministry of External Affairs' count (as on 30 June 2026); no official figure for medicine alone is published. How to read these cards — and what “WDOMS-listed” really means
NMC publishes no approved list of foreign universities — it says so itself. So no site, including this one, can honestly tell you a Polish university is “NMC approved”. What decides your future registration is whether your degree is NMC-compliant under FMGL-2021: 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium, and a qualification that licenses you to practise in that country. After you clear FMGE, FMGL-2021 also requires a further 12-month supervised internship in India.

Each Polish university runs its own selection, and some interview candidates or ask for a personal statement. Application windows differ: the Medical University of Gdańsk opened 2026/27 applications on 18 March 2026 and closed them on 15 July 2026, so start early in the year for an autumn intake.

Pay the first-year tuition fee by the university's deadline. Book a university dormitory or private accommodation. Arrival in Poland + Residence Permit (Karta Pobytu)

MBBS in Poland Syllabus - Year-by-Year Breakdown
Polish universities teach Medicine as a 6-year long-cycle master's programme (12 semesters and 360 ECTS at Gdańsk). Years 1–3 are heavy basic science + early clinical exposure; Years 4–5 are hospital-based rotations; Year 6 is final-year practical clinical training. The LEK, Poland's national medical licensing exam, is a separate step for graduates who want to practise in Poland.

WDOMS-listed University
Your Polish university must be WDOMS-listed, and all 6 universities here are. A WDOMS listing alone does not make a degree FMGL-2021 compliant. Graduates whose degree meets the criteria sit the FMGE - the route until the National Exit Test comes into force; no NExT date has been notified - complete a 12-month supervised internship in India, then register with a State Medical Council.
EU Directive 2005/36/EC (EU Nationals)
The Directive's automatic recognition applies to nationals of EU member states (Article 2(1)). An Indian citizen with a Polish degree goes through each EU country's own procedure for non-EU qualifications, and the requirements differ.
ECFMG Note on WDOMS (USA - USMLE)
ECFMG approves no school. USMLE eligibility depends on the university's WDOMS record carrying an ECFMG sponsor note - check it for your university before you count on the US route.
GMC PLAB (UK)
The GMC decides whether it accepts a primary medical qualification for PLAB. Check your university and degree with the GMC; graduates who pass PLAB 1 and 2 can then apply for GMC registration.
FMGL-2021: Internship and Licence (NMC Rule)
FMGL-2021 requires 54 months of study and a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, in English, and a qualification that licenses you to practise in Poland - then a further 12-month supervised internship in India. Polish universities describe a 6-year, 12-semester programme. Poznan University of Medical Sciences states that graduates who want to practise in Poland must also complete a post-graduate internship (its English-language internship lasts 7 months), pass the LEK licensing exam and pass a Polish-language exam. So get in writing how the programme's months split between study and internship, and whether you will receive a licence to practise in Poland.

A Polish MBBS keeps several routes open - EU practice (subject to each country's rules for non-EU nationals), USA (USMLE), UK (PLAB), India (FMGE), Canada, and Australia.

The PLAB route: pass PLAB 1 and 2, then apply for GMC registration. The GMC decides whether it accepts your primary medical qualification, so check your university and degree with the GMC before you rely on this route.

Yes, if your university qualifies. ECFMG approves no school: USMLE eligibility depends on the university's WDOMS record carrying an ECFMG sponsor note. Check the record for the university you choose. Graduates who meet ECFMG's requirements sit USMLE Steps 1, 2 CK and 3 like any other international medical graduate.
Usually you need an English certificate. The Medical University of Warsaw cites a 2025 change in Polish law (the Act of 4 April 2025) and a regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 30 July 2025 that sets which documents can prove your English. Warsaw accepts IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 87, among others, and says citizenship of an English-speaking country does not count as proof. Poznan asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 94, and Lublin for a B2 certificate from the Minister's list. Check your university's current list before you book a test.
For EU nationals, yes: Directive 2005/36/EC gives their medical qualifications automatic recognition across member states, and Article 2(1) limits the Directive to nationals of a member state. An Indian citizen with a Polish degree is not covered automatically. Each EU country runs its own procedure for qualifications held by non-EU nationals, and the requirements differ, so check with the medical regulator of the country you are aiming for.
There is no Poland-wide FMGE rate to quote. The NBEMS 2024 report prints institution rows, not country totals, and it lists only two Polish institutions: Medical University of Gdansk, 2 of 2 candidates passed (100.00%), and Medical University of Lublin, 2 of 5 (40.00%). Both cohorts are far too small to read as a rate. Jagiellonian, Warsaw, Wroclaw and Poznan do not appear in the 2024 report.
Poland ranks 22nd of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2026 (Institute for Economics and Peace). Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, and Poznan are large, modern cities. About 5,000 Indian students study in Poland across all subjects (Ministry of External Affairs, as on 30 June 2026). The Embassy of India in Warsaw provides consular support.
Poland's published fees are higher than at most universities on our Russia and Georgia pages - compare them there - but the degree is an EU qualification, with the USMLE and PLAB routes open subject to each regulator's checks. For India, all three countries lead to the same FMGE route, and Polish cohorts in the NBEMS report are too small to compare. If your goal is only to practise in India, compare the published fees on the Russia and Georgia pages before choosing Poland. Poland suits students who want a European degree and a career that may lie outside India.
