The Philippines offers an English-medium, US-pattern MD, with 58 WDOMS-listed medical schools to choose from. Fees are set school by school and mostly unpublished: of the 8 we shortlist, only Our Lady of Fatima University prints an international-student figure. It is an alternative to Russia and Central Asia for Indian students who want to study in English or aim at a US career - with one open question for practice in India, explained in the note below.
Important note on degree title: Philippines medical universities award a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree - not "MBBS". This is not a higher degree; it is the primary medical qualification under a US-style, graduate-entry system. Whether it counts in India depends on it meeting NMC's FMGL-2021 criteria, not on its name. All references to "MBBS in Philippines" on this page refer to the MD (Doctor of Medicine) program.

MBBS in Philippines is called the Doctor of Medicine (MD), a graduate-entry degree at WDOMS-listed universities: the Embassy of India, Manila says a Bachelor's degree and the NMAT are a must for MD enrolment. Indian students also need a valid NEET qualifying scorecard and 50% PCB in Class 12. English is an official language. After graduation, students clear the FMGE to practise in India, or pursue USMLE for the USA where their school's WDOMS record carries an ECFMG sponsor note.

Note: Philippines awards a "Doctor of Medicine (MD)" - not MBBS. NMC approves no foreign university or degree title; what counts is whether your MD meets FMGL-2021 - at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium and a licence to practise in the Philippines - followed by the FMGE and a 12-month supervised internship in India. The Embassy of India, Manila's advisory of 17 June 2026 reports CHED's position that the MD meets these criteria, but adds that a foreign graduate can sit the Philippine licensure exam only where their own country lets Filipinos practise on equal terms, and that guidance from Indian authorities on that reciprocity is "awaited". Why Choose Philippines for MBBS in 2027?
The Philippines combines English as an official language, a US-pattern MD, 58 WDOMS-listed medical schools and a tropical climate close to South India's.
English as an Official Language
Filipino is the national language and English is co-official, and CHED says the MD programme is taught entirely in English (Embassy of India, Manila, June 2026). English tests vary by school: Manila Central University's College of Medicine asks foreign applicants for IELTS 6.5 or higher, or TOEFL 75 or higher, so check your school's own requirement list.
US-Pattern MD Curriculum
Philippine medical schools follow the US structure - a Bachelor's degree first, then the MD - so USMLE Step 1 topics overlap with the MD's basic-science years. Whether a school's graduates can sit USMLE depends on the ECFMG sponsor note on its WDOMS record, so check that record before you apply. CHED's position, reported by the Embassy of India, Manila in June 2026, is that graduates heading for the USA, UK, Canada or Australia do not need to pass the Philippine licensure exam.
Tropical Climate
The Philippines is tropical - hot and humid, with a monsoon season and a typhoon season - which is closer to South India's climate than Russia's winters or Kazakhstan's continental climate.

The World Directory lists 58 medical schools in the Philippines; we shortlist 8 of them. They span Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Dagupan and Tuguegarao, from city campuses to quieter provincial ones. Each school sets its own fees and most publish no international-student figure, so compare written fee schedules from the schools themselves rather than agent price lists.
NEET for India, NMAT for the MD
Two tests apply. NMC requires a valid NEET qualifying score for any Indian student studying medicine abroad. The Philippines adds its own: the Embassy of India, Manila states that a Bachelor's degree and a pass in the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) are a must for enrolment in the MD, and Gullas, Manila Central and Lyceum-Northwestern all list an NMAT result among their requirements. A student joining after Class 12 therefore completes a pre-med Bachelor's first - the Embassy asks that it be CHED-accredited.
Indian Community in Manila, Davao and Cebu
The Ministry of External Affairs counts around 9,800 Indian students in the Philippines, most of them studying medicine, and an Indian diaspora of more than 70,000 concentrated in and around Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu (India–Philippines brief, April 2026). The same brief lists 31 gurdwaras and 8 Hindu temples built by the community, and Indian associations celebrate the main Indian festivals.

NMC publishes no approved list of foreign universities — it says so itself. So no site, including this one, can honestly tell you a Philippine university is “NMC approved”. What decides your future registration is whether your degree is NMC-compliant under FMGL-2021: 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium, and a qualification that licenses you to practise in that country. After you clear FMGE, FMGL-2021 also requires a further 12-month supervised internship in India.
So we show you the three things that are checkable per university — its World Directory listing, its actual NBEMS FMGE record with denominators, and any NMC alert naming it. NMC needs your NEET qualifying scorecard. Entry to the MD itself also needs a Bachelor's degree and an NMAT result - Gullas and Manila Central ask for at least the 40th percentile. Admission / Acceptance Letter
The university issues an acceptance letter - ask it for the expected timeline. You need the letter for the student visa; some schools also ask for CHED paperwork, and AMA School of Medicine lists a Certificate of Eligibility from CHED among its requirements. Philippines Student Visa (9(f))
The Philippine student visa is the 9(f). Gullas College of Medicine's visa office, for example, converts a tourist visa (9(a)) to a 9(f) with the Bureau of Immigration and handles its extensions, and will not process it without documents such as your Bachelor's diploma and NMAT result. Ask your university which route it uses, and for its current document list and timeline.
Fee Payment + Hostel Booking
Pay the first-semester or first-year tuition and confirm your hostel accommodation before departure. Philippines universities typically accept bank wire transfers (SWIFT). The Embassy of India, Manila advises remitting fees directly to the medical college and getting an official receipt. Note: USMLE Step 1 basic-science content overlaps with the MD's early years and Step 2 CK with its clinical years. FMGE is a separate exam built on India's MBBS syllabus, and in NBEMS's 2024 report 2,003 of 9,967 candidates (20.10%) trained in the Philippines passed it, against Russia's 3,331 of 11,276 candidates (29.54%). If you mean to practise in India, plan dedicated FMGE preparation rather than relying on USMLE material alone.
NMC Compliance & MBBS Validity in India
Check these six points before you apply - five are conditions for your Philippines MD to be valid in India, and one (the WDOMS listing) is a record check:
FMGL-2021 Compliance
NMC publishes no approved list of foreign universities. Your degree has to meet the FMGL-2021 criteria at nmc.org.in, including at least 54 months of study. CHED told the Embassy of India, Manila (letter of 8 May 2025) that the Philippine MD is a 54-month programme, excluding the pre-medical Bachelor's; Our Lady of Fatima University's own MD page lists a duration of 4 years. Get the study and internship split written on your admission letter, and confirm it again before each academic year.
WDOMS Listing (a check, not an NMC condition)
Check your university's entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools (wdoms.org), which lists 58 medical schools in the Philippines, and note its FAIMER School ID and sponsor notes before applying.
English-Medium Instruction
The entire MD must be taught in English. CHED says the programme is entirely in English, and English is an official language of the Philippines.
Valid NEET Score at Admission
Your NEET scorecard must be valid (qualifying score) at the time of admission. Keep it with your admission papers.
Internship at Same University
FMGL-2021 requires a 12-month internship at the same institution, and CHED's letter lists a 12-month internship in the same medical institution or its attached hospital alongside the 54-month MD. Internship cannot be transferred to India or any other country.
Licence to Practise in the Philippines
FMGL-2021 also requires that the degree license you to practise in the country that awarded it, on the same terms as its citizens. Philippine law lets a foreign graduate sit the Physician Licensure Examination only if their country allows Filipinos to practise under the same rules; the Embassy of India, Manila (17 June 2026) says guidance from Indian authorities on that reciprocity is awaited. In May 2023 the Embassy reported the PRC's written confirmation that Indian nationals were not eligible to register for the exam. CHED cites a Certificate of Registrability instead - ask the university in writing how its Indian graduates meet this condition.

Career Pathways After MBBS (MD) in Philippines
Six career routes are open to a Philippines MD from a WDOMS-listed university, each with its own conditions. Graduates can pursue USMLE where their school's WDOMS record carries an ECFMG sponsor note; practising in India or in the Philippines depends on the licensure question described above.
Practice in India
Pass the FMGE (NBEMS now holds it three times a year; NMC's draft amendment of 11 August 2026 keeps it as the route "until National Exit Test (NEXT) comes into force", and no NExT date has been notified), complete the 12-month supervised internship in India, then register with a State Medical Council. United States of America
Graduates of schools whose WDOMS record carries an ECFMG sponsor note can apply for ECFMG certification, sit USMLE and enter the US residency match. The US-pattern curriculum covers Step 1 topics in regular MD coursework, and CHED says graduates heading for the USA do not need to pass the Philippine licensure exam (Embassy of India, Manila, June 2026). Options include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Family Medicine, and Psychiatry residencies.
United Kingdom
Clear PLAB Part 1 (MCQ) and PLAB Part 2 (OSCE), obtain GMC registration, and enter NHS Foundation Training. Check that the GMC accepts your school's primary medical qualification before relying on this route.
Middle East (UAE, Saudi, Qatar)
Each Gulf regulator - for example the Dubai Health Authority and the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties - sets its own qualification, licence and experience requirements. Check the regulator's current rules against your school and your licence status before relying on this route.
Philippines Practice
Practising in the Philippines requires passing the Physician Licensure Examination. A foreign graduate can take it only if their own country lets Filipino citizens practise medicine under the same rules as its citizens; for India, the Embassy of India, Manila (17 June 2026) says guidance on establishing that reciprocity is awaited. In May 2023 the Embassy reported the PRC's written confirmation that Indian nationals were not eligible to register for the exam, and that none had been granted registration.
Canada
The MCCQE (Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination) is open to graduates of a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a Canada Sponsor Note - check your school's record before relying on this route. The MCC says international medical graduates must pass it to apply for a Canadian residency programme.

Honest answers to the most common questions Indian students and parents ask before applying to Philippines.
Not automatically. The Philippines awards a Doctor of Medicine (MD), not an MBBS, and NMC approves no foreign university or degree title. What matters is whether your MD meets FMGL-2021: at least 54 months of medical study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium and a licence to practise in the Philippines, followed by the FMGE and a 12-month supervised internship in India. The Embassy of India, Manila's advisory of 17 June 2026 reports that CHED has written that the Philippine MD meets these conditions, describing a 54-month MD that excludes the pre-med Bachelor's. It also says a foreign graduate can sit the Philippine licensure exam only on a reciprocal basis, and that guidance from Indian authorities on that reciprocity is awaited. Course length is not stated the same way everywhere - Our Lady of Fatima University's own MD page lists a duration of 4 years - so get the study and internship split written on your admission letter, and read the advisory and NMC's study-abroad page before you pay.
In NBEMS's 2024 report, 2,003 of 9,967 candidates (20.10%) trained in the Philippines passed FMGE - below the all-country figure (20,382 of 79,000, 25.80%) and below Kazakhstan (1,261 of 5,018, 25.13%) and Kyrgyzstan (3,792 of 15,135, 25.05%). The Philippine figure was 1,326 of 9,215 candidates (14.39%) in 2023 and 2,369 of 8,764 candidates (27.03%) in 2022. Results vary by university: in 2024, 272 of 1,375 Gullas College of Medicine candidates passed (19.78%), 586 of 2,993 from Davao Medical School Foundation (19.58%) and 470 of 2,150 from Perpetual Help's JONELTA school (21.86%). FMGE is built on India's MBBS syllabus, so plan dedicated preparation alongside the MD.
It depends on the school. English is an official language of the Philippines and the medium of instruction, but requirements are set school by school: Manila Central University's College of Medicine lists IELTS 6.5 or higher, or TOEFL 75 or higher, among its requirements for foreign applicants. Every MD applicant also needs a Bachelor's degree and an NMAT result, according to the Embassy of India, Manila. Check your school's own requirement list before applying.
Yes, with ordinary precautions. The Ministry of External Affairs counts around 9,800 Indian students in the Philippines (April 2026), most of them studying medicine, and the Indian community is concentrated around Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu - where six of the eight schools on this page sit. Standard urban precautions apply, particularly in Metro Manila. A.J Trust advises students to register with the Embassy of India in Manila on arrival.
In the Philippines the MD is a graduate-entry degree. The Embassy of India, Manila states that a Bachelor's degree and the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) are a must for enrolment in the MD, so a student joining after Class 12 first completes a pre-med Bachelor's (BS, BA, etc.). The Embassy asks students taking that Bachelor's in the Philippines to make sure it is CHED-accredited, meets the MD's entry requirements and runs for the duration CHED's guidelines set. CHED describes the MD itself as 54 months plus a 12-month internship. If a school offers a shortened or combined route, get its CHED approval and the study and internship split in writing before you pay.

It depends on your career goal. The Philippines suits students aiming at USMLE and a US career, or who want to study in English. Russia suits students aiming to practise in India: on FMGE it was ahead in NBEMS's 2024 report, with 3,331 of 11,276 candidates (29.54%) passing against the Philippines' 2,003 of 9,967 candidates (20.10%), and Indian graduates of Philippine schools still face the unresolved licensure question in the Embassy of India, Manila's June 2026 advisory. Russia also has the larger Indian student community - about 20,000 against around 9,800 in the Philippines, by the Ministry of External Affairs' country briefs (June and April 2026).
