USMLE Pathway - Schools Built Around US Residency

Ross University and AUB both teach a US-style MD aimed at USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK and US residency. Ross requires a pass in USMLE Step 1 before clinical training begins, and its catalog says graduates must pass Step 1 and Step 2 CK and obtain ECFMG certification to enter a US residency. Ross publishes its own Step 1 pass rate and residency-attainment rate as percentages without the number of candidates behind them, and says its Step 1 figure is not verified against third-party exam reports, so ask for the counts before relying on them.

Quality of Life - HDI Rank 69 (UNDP 2025)

Barbados ranks 69th on the UN Human Development Index (0.811, Human Development Report 2025), behind Antigua and Barbuda (53rd), Saint Kitts and Nevis (58th) and the Bahamas (66th) among Caribbean countries. HDI measures health, education and income, not crime, so ask the university about campus security and housing before you decide.

WDOMS-Listed - but Check the India Route Before You Pay

Ross University and AUB are WDOMS-listed. NMC approves no foreign university, so the India route depends on the degree meeting FMGL-2021. Both schools hold clinical training outside Barbados (Ross at US teaching hospitals; AUB at hospitals in Chicago and at Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana as well as in Barbados), while FMGL-2021 says no part of the training or internship may be done in a country other than the one awarding the degree. Ask the school in writing how its degree meets each FMGL-2021 condition before you choose it for an India career.

Clinical Training at US-Affiliated Hospitals

Ross holds its 80 weeks of clinical training (48 weeks of core clerkships, 32 weeks of electives) at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States, with options in Canada. AUB's 72-week clinical programme (48 weeks of core rotations, 24 weeks of electives) runs at affiliated hospitals in the USA and the Caribbean. This gives students US hospital experience - and, for an Indian student, it is the main FMGL-2021 problem.

English-Only Teaching - No Language Adjustment

English is the official language of Barbados, and both schools teach entirely in English. There is no second language to learn for study or daily life. Indian students from English-medium schools need no TOEFL or IELTS at AUB, and Ross asks for one only from applicants with fewer than 60 upper-division credits from an English-language college.

Fees Published in US Dollars

Both schools publish their fees per semester in US dollars. Ross says all fees must be paid in US dollars; AUB takes payment by draft or wire transfer only. For an Indian family the rupee cost still moves with the USD-INR rate, so keep headroom in the budget, and add the administrative, insurance, housing and visa fees each school lists on top of tuition.

This is the route Barbados MD programmes are built for. Pass USMLE Step 1 (Ross requires it before clinical training) and Step 2 CK, obtain ECFMG certification, and apply through the NRMP Match; Step 3 usually comes during residency. A non-US citizen also needs a US visa for residency. A match is never guaranteed, so ask each school for its residency figures with the number of applicants behind them.

India's route is FMGE: NBEMS now holds it three times a year, and NMC's draft amendment of 11 August 2026 keeps it as the route until NExT comes into force; no NExT date has been notified. Registration also needs a degree that meets FMGL-2021, which bars any part of the training or internship in a country other than the one awarding the degree - and both Ross and AUB train students in the USA. Get the school's answer on each FMGL-2021 condition in writing first. NBEMS 2024 lists AUB at 17 of 29 candidates passed (58.62%), too small a cohort to be reliable; Ross does not appear.

Ross's catalog says Canadian students may be eligible for residency training in Canada, and AUB says it is recognised by the Medical Council of Canada on the basis of its World Directory listing. For an Indian graduate, check the school's WDOMS sponsor note and the Medical Council of Canada's current rules before relying on this route.

PLAB 1 (written) and PLAB 2 (OSCE) lead to GMC registration and NHS posts. Whether a Barbados MD is accepted depends on the GMC's own check of the primary medical qualification, so confirm it with the GMC before relying on this route. The English-medium background helps.

Licensing rules differ by country. AUB lists graduates who took internships at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados and Kingston Public Hospital in Jamaica. Gulf regulators set their own rules for MD holders, so check them with the regulator before relying on this route, whether you are preparing for USMLE or FMGE.

NEET-PG needs an FMGE pass, registration with NMC or a State Medical Council, and the 12-month internship in India finished by the session's cut-off, so the FMGL-2021 question above decides this route too.
