Study MBBS at Tajik National University
Dushanbe, Tajikistan · University established 1947; medicine since 2012 (WDOMS) · General Medicine, English-medium group (TNU, from 2024-25)
Quick Overview
Tajik National University is a state university in Dushanbe, established in 1947, whose Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as F0008404, with instruction since 2012. The Embassy of India names it among four Tajik institutions taking foreign medical students. Unlike Avicenna, it publishes a fee: 32,600 a year in the "far abroad" band and 18,800 in the "near abroad" band on its 2026-27 list, which prints no currency. TNU says its English-medium group opened in 2024-25. Its NBEMS record is 1 pass from 5 candidates across the 2021-2023 reports, too few to judge, and the IAAR accreditation of its General Medicine programme lapsed on 27 April 2026. NMC approves no foreign university.
About TNU
Tajik National University was established as Tajik State University by a USSR Council of Ministers resolution of 21 March 1947 and began teaching on 1 September 1948; it has carried its present name since 2008. It is a state institution of higher professional education whose founder is the Government of Tajikistan, and it reports 23,658 students across the university in 2025-26.
Medicine is the newest part of it. A medical-pharmaceutical department opened in 2009, became a medical-pharmaceutical faculty in 2012 and the Faculty of Medicine in September 2015; dentistry became a faculty of its own in 2025. TNU says it opened an English-language group for foreign students in 2024-25, when more than 80 Indian citizens enrolled in General Medicine for the first time. Its latest published faculty figure is 2,299 General Medicine students, in February 2023.
For an Indian applicant the checkable records are three. The World Directory entry F0008404 lists a 5-Year MBBS and a 5-Year MD for citizens of India and Pakistan, both in English, and a 6-Year MD, with no ECFMG note and no accreditation on the record. NBEMS lists 5 TNU candidates in all, in its 2021-2023 reports. And no NMC notice names TNU, which is as far as an NMC record can go, because NMC approves no foreign university.
TNU’s Faculty of Medicine is the newer of the two Tajik institutions we cover: it publishes a fee, but its English-medium group dates only from 2024-25. We also cover Avicenna Tajik State Medical University. See the full MBBS in Tajikistan guide for the other institutions the Embassy of India names, and for what is actually known about each of them.

Course Length - Get This in Writing
The one item on this page worth arguing about with the university before you pay.
Read this before you sign anything. FMGL-2021 needs at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same institution, and the internship does not count toward the 54. No TNU record settles which side of that line its English-medium track falls on: if the internship sits inside the five years, the study block is 48 months and fails; if it follows them, it is 60 months. TNU has published no curriculum for the English group, and no record says where the internship is served. Before you pay, ask TNU to state on your admission letter the months of study, the months of internship, the institution where the internship is served, and the title the diploma will carry.
World Directory: five years, split not stated
The World Directory lists a "5-Year MBBS (program for citizens of India and Pakistan)" taught in English, with a five-year curriculum. Its only internship line is a licensing condition: graduates can work in Tajikistan as a general practitioner "after completing a one-year compulsory medical rotation internship". It does not say whether that year sits inside the five or after them.
TNU’s 2024 letter: 60 months, and an internship it does not place
In its letter to the Embassy of India of 4 September 2024, forwarded by Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry on 11 September, TNU says the MBBS "is 5 years, which meets most of the NMC requirements and provides 60 months of course duration", and separately that "all graduates will complete a 12-month Compulsory Rotational Medical Internship". It does not say where the internship is served or whether it follows the 60 months. This is the university’s own statement; no ministry confirmed it.
TNU’s own programme: six years, internship after the diploma
TNU’s educational programme for General Medicine (code 1-79 01 01, in force from 2022-23) runs six years, 312 weeks, and treats internship as a step after the diploma. Its 2025-26 admission plan files the 25 English-medium places under this same code.
The Embassy: country-wide, not TNU-specific
The Embassy of India’s advisory of 10 July 2026 describes the undergraduate medical programme for foreign students in Tajikistan as typically five years followed by a one-year internship, and says this may vary. It gives no TNU-specific course length.
English requirement: TNU’s list of documents for foreign applicants has no English certificate on it; its admission rules call for an interview instead. The English-medium group is new: TNU says it opened an English-language group in its Faculty of Medicine in 2024-25, with more than 120 foreign students, and its 2025-26 admission plan gives it 25 of the 150 General Medicine places. TNU’s own documents from 2023 describe teaching in Tajik and Russian only, and no ministry has confirmed the English medium to the Embassy, so ask how much of each year is taught in English. Expect to need basic Tajik or Russian with patients, as the Embassy notes for all Tajik universities.
Fees - What the University Publishes
Figures exactly as TNU's own price list prints them, with no conversion.
| Who pays it | A year, as printed | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign citizens, "far abroad" band (аз дур) | 32,600 | The list does not define the bands. Ask TNU to confirm in writing which one an Indian passport falls in. |
| Foreign citizens, "near abroad" band (аз наздик) | 18,800 | TNU’s Russian-language 2023-24 list labels the same two columns near abroad and far abroad. |
| Citizens of Tajikistan | 14,000 | Shown for comparison. |

What the price list does and does not say
The list prints no currency on its tuition rows; TNU’s other price items, such as its doctoral fees, are in somoni, Tajikistan’s currency. It splits foreign citizens into a "near abroad" and a "far abroad" band without defining them, so ask TNU to confirm in writing which band an Indian passport falls in. It gives one rate per specialty, so it does not say whether the English-medium group pays the same, and it publishes no course total; the same foreign rates appear on TNU’s 2021-22 and 2023-24 lists. The 2027-28 list is not out yet. Agent sites quote anything from US$2,000 to US$4,500 a year for TNU, disagree with each other, and none of them cites this list. The Embassy of India tells students to get fee details directly from the university, and we get the amount, the currency and your band confirmed by TNU in writing before you commit.
Accommodation: TNU houses international students in its dormitories on contract when places are vacant, and says the cost depends on the hall; its 2025 annual report counts eight dormitories. It publishes no current rate for foreign students, and the 2026-27 price list has no hostel line. Ask for the hall and the rate in writing with the fee confirmation, as the Embassy of India also advises.
Note: Fees are set by the university, not by us, and can change by academic year. Ask us for a written quote from TNU and treat any figure you see elsewhere - ours included, if we ever print one without a source - as unverified.

5 candidates in all: too few to judge
NBEMS’s institute-wise reports list Tajik National University in three years only: 0 of 1 candidates passed in 2021, 0 of 2 in 2022 and 1 of 2 in 2023, so 1 of 5 in all, far too few to judge. It has no row in the 2019, 2020 or 2024 reports or in either 2025 session. All five sat FMGE before TNU says it opened its English-medium group, so the record says nothing about that track.
Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students
NEET Qualified
Valid NEET UG score mandatory as per NMC norms. Min. 50th percentile (General), 40th percentile (SC/ST/OBC).
PCB Percentage
Minimum 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Biology in Class 12 (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for General-PwD).
Age Requirement
Must be 17 years or above as on 31 December of the year of admission.
No English Test
TNU’s document list for foreign applicants asks for no IELTS or TOEFL; its rules include an admission interview. The English group is new (2024-25), so ask who teaches in English.
Admission Procedure
Fill Application Form
Submit basic details and attach the university's required documents through A.J Trust.
Get the Course Length in Writing
Ask TNU to state months of study, months of internship, and where the internship is served - on the admission letter. Official records conflict on this, and it is what NMC will read.
Read the Contract Before Signing
The Embassy of India advises signing nothing that is only in Russian or Tajik. We get you an English or bilingual contract and go through it with you.
Apostille Your Documents
Indian certificates and mark sheets must be apostilled by the MEA (CPV Division), New Delhi, before admission abroad.
Student Visa & Travel
Apply for the Tajik student visa with the university's invitation letter; our team arranges pickup and check-in on arrival.
Register With the Embassy
Register with the Embassy of India in Dushanbe on arrival, then begin the General Medicine programme.
How it works at TNU, specifically
- TNU admits foreign citizens on a paid contract, within the number of places its licence allows. Its 2025-26 admission plan gave General Medicine 150 contract places: 75 Tajik-medium, 50 Russian-medium and 25 English-medium.
- TNU publishes no current application window for foreign applicants; the only one on its site ran from 1 July to 19 August 2020. Confirm the 2027-28 dates with us, not with an agent’s deadline.
- Nostrification comes first, then an admission interview; TNU’s rules count a missed interview without good reason as a fail. Full-time study is open to applicants under 35.
- Ask TNU to put in writing which programme you are joining, the months of study, the months of internship and where the internship is served, and the title on the diploma. See the course-length note above.
- Sign nothing that is only in Russian or Tajik; the Embassy of India asks students to insist on an English or bilingual contract and to read it before signing.
- Agent sites often call it "Tajik National Medical University". No institution by that name is in the World Directory; the faculty is listed as Tajik National University Faculty of Medicine, F0008404.
Documents Required
Original school leaving certificate, with a notarised translation
Certificate of equivalence (nostrification) from Tajikistan’s State Supervision Service in Education
Notarised translated copy of your passport
Medical certificate on Form 038
HIV/AIDS test certificate, certified by your country’s health authority
Six 3x4 cm photographs
Application form and tuition contract with the payment receipt, both issued by TNU’s admission committee
Valid NEET UG score card (required by NMC, not by the university)
This is TNU’s own list for foreign citizens, from its Tajik-language admission page; its English admission page gives the same items. It asks for no English certificate, but it needs nostrification first: Tajikistan’s State Supervision Service in Education has to recognise your school certificate as equivalent. Indian certificates must also be apostilled by the MEA (CPV Division), New Delhi, and your Tajik degree must later be apostilled by Tajikistan’s Ministry of Education before NMC or a State Medical Council will accept it. Pay only into the university’s own account, and never hand your passport to anyone for safekeeping, which the Embassy of India warns against explicitly. A.J Trust guides every document step at no cost.
What counts for TNU, and what to check first
It publishes its fee
TNU’s 2026-27 price list gives General Medicine at 32,600 a year in the "far abroad" band and 18,800 in the "near abroad" band, with no currency printed. Avicenna publishes none.
A state university in the capital
TNU was established in 1947 and began teaching in 1948. Its founder is the Government of Tajikistan, and it has 23,658 students across the university (2025-26).
Named by the Embassy of India
the Embassy’s July 2026 advisory lists TNU among four Tajik institutions taking foreign medical students. The list is not exhaustive and endorses none; NMC approves no foreign university.
Check first: a new English group
TNU says its English-language group opened in 2024-25, when more than 80 Indian students enrolled for the first time. No English-medium cohort has graduated, so none has sat FMGE.
Check first: almost no FMGE record
NBEMS lists 5 TNU candidates in all, across its 2021-2023 reports, and 1 passed. That is far too few to judge, against Avicenna’s 1,174 of 5,939.
Check first: accreditation lapsed
IAAR, a WFME-recognised agency, accredited TNU’s General Medicine programme from 28 April 2023 to 27 April 2026, and its registry shows no renewal as of 29 October 2026. TNU’s state accreditation runs to 30 July 2029, and the World Directory record carries no ECFMG note.

Tajikistan
Dushanbe is Tajikistan’s capital and, in the Embassy of India’s words, the city where most of the country’s universities and medical institutes are located; the Embassy describes the law-and-order situation there as generally satisfactory. It asks students to take care in public places late at night and with strangers, and to bring warm clothing and winter footwear, because Tajikistan’s mountainous terrain makes the winters extremely cold. TNU’s address is 17 Rudaki Avenue, Dushanbe 734025, and its medical diagnostic and training centre is on the university’s Student Campus. The Embassy is at 48 Khusravi Dehlavi Street and asks every Indian student to register with it on arrival; its 24x7 emergency helpline is +992-935710262.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about MBBS at TNU
TNU publishes its tuition. Its price list for the 2026-27 academic year, posted on 3 March 2026, gives General Medicine at 32,600 a year for foreign citizens in the "far abroad" band and 18,800 in the "near abroad" band (Tajik citizens pay 14,000). The list prints no currency, though TNU’s other price items are in somoni, and it does not say which band an Indian passport falls in or whether the English-medium group pays the same. It gives no course total and no hostel rate, and the 2027-28 list is not out yet. Agent sites quote US$2,000 to US$4,500 a year and do not agree with each other. A.J Trust gets the amount, the currency and your band confirmed by TNU in writing before you commit.
No record settles it, so get it in writing before you pay. FMGL-2021 needs 54 months of study plus a separate 12-month internship at the same institution, and the internship does not count toward the 54. The World Directory lists a 5-year MBBS for citizens of India and Pakistan without saying whether the one-year internship sits inside or after it. TNU’s letter to the Embassy of India of 4 September 2024 gives 60 months of course duration and a 12-month internship, without saying where it is served. TNU’s own General Medicine programme runs six years, with internship after the diploma. If the internship is inside the five years, the study block is 48 months and fails. Ask TNU for the months of study, the months of internship and the internship institution on your admission letter.
TNU says so, but only recently. Its 2024 letter to the Embassy of India says "the medium of Instruction of the complete course is in English", its 2025 report says it opened an English-language group in its Faculty of Medicine in 2024-25 with more than 120 foreign students, and more than 80 Indian citizens enrolled that year for the first time. TNU’s own documents from 2023 describe teaching in Tajik and Russian only, and the World Directory’s 2012 start date for the English track conflicts with that. No ministry has confirmed the English medium to the Embassy, as Tajikistan’s Health Ministry did for Avicenna. Ask how much of each year is taught in English.
There is not enough of a record to give one. NBEMS’s institute-wise reports list 5 TNU candidates in all: 0 of 1 passed in 2021, 0 of 2 in 2022 and 1 of 2 in 2023. TNU has no row in the 2019, 2020 or 2024 reports or in either 2025 session. All five sat FMGE before TNU says it opened its English-medium group, so no English-medium TNU graduate has an FMGE result yet. For comparison, Avicenna passed 1,174 of 5,939 candidates across NBEMS’s 2019-2025 reports.
"NMC approved" is not a status that exists. NMC publishes no approved list of foreign universities, and the Embassy of India in Dushanbe repeats that NMC approves or recognises no foreign medical institution; no NMC notice names TNU. What decides your registration in India is whether your degree meets FMGL-2021: 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium, and a qualification that licenses you to practise in Tajikistan. For TNU two of those are unsettled. The study and internship split is not stated in any record, and the licence rests on TNU’s own letter, which says graduates can be licensed "on an equal basis with local residents"; we found no Health Ministry document confirming that for TNU. TNU is listed in the World Directory as F0008404.
Neither claim holds as written. TNU’s notice of 13 June 2025 says its programme is accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education, but WFME accredits no medical school (it recognises accrediting agencies), and the licence number the notice cites, 0003697, is TNU’s own state education licence of 1 June 2023. The World Directory record shows no ECFMG note as of 29 October 2026, and TNU’s notice itself says that update is in process. What can be shown: Tajikistan’s state accreditation of the university runs to 30 July 2029, and IAAR, an agency WFME recognises, accredited the General Medicine programme from 28 April 2023 to 27 April 2026, with no renewal in its registry so far.
They differ on the records that matter. Avicenna is a dedicated medical university that has taught medicine since 1939, with 5,939 FMGE candidates across NBEMS’s 2019-2025 reports, an ECFMG note on its World Directory record and a Health Ministry letter confirming its English medium; it publishes no fee. TNU is a national university whose medicine faculty dates from 2012 on the World Directory, with an English-medium group TNU says it opened in 2024-25 and 5 FMGE candidates in all; it publishes its fee. Both need the course-length split in writing. Read the Avicenna page alongside this one, or ask us to go through both with your NEET score.
A valid qualifying NEET score, which NMC requires for every foreign MBBS admission; the Embassy of India adds that your NEET result works as your Eligibility Certificate and that you must start the course within three years of its declaration. TNU itself asks for its nine-item document list, with your school certificate nostrified in Tajikistan first, and an admission interview; full-time study is open to applicants under 35. TNU publishes no current application window, so confirm the dates for 2027-28 with us.
It is not settled in writing yet. The World Directory lists three programmes at TNU’s Faculty of Medicine: a 5-Year MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and a 5-Year MD (Doctor of Medicine), both for citizens of India and Pakistan and taught in English, and a 6-Year MD taught in Tajik, Russian and English. TNU’s own documents name the General Medicine qualification "Врач" (physician) in its programme and "Духтур" (doctor) in its state accreditation annex. Ask TNU to confirm in writing the title that will be printed on your diploma. For FMGE and NExT the FMGL-2021 criteria are what count: 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium, and a qualification that licenses you to practise in Tajikistan.
