Study MBBS at Avicenna Tajik State Medical University

Two official records disagree, and you should settle it in writing before you pay. FMGL-2021 needs 54 months of study plus a separate 12-month internship at the same institution, and the internship does not count toward the 54. Tajikistan’s Health Minister wrote to the Embassy of India in March 2024 that the programme is six years including a one-year internship - five years of study, which clears the bar. The university’s own admission rules say General Medicine is six years, and the Embassy’s July 2026 advisory says five years followed by a one-year internship. But the World Directory’s separate entry for the English-medium "General Medicine program for citizens of India and Pakistan" records five years including the internship, which would leave 48 months of study - short. Ask Avicenna to state the split on your admission letter.

Across NBEMS’s institute-wise reports from 2019 to 2025, 1,174 of 5,939 Avicenna candidates have passed (19.77%). Year by year: 65 of 347 in 2019, 55 of 548 in 2020, 143 of 679 in 2021, 207 of 941 in 2022, 207 of 1,216 in 2023, 311 of 1,195 in 2024 and 186 of 1,013 in 2025. The 2024 figure, 311 of 1,195 (26.03%), was its best and sat just above that year’s 20,382 of 79,000 (25.80%) across all countries; 2025 fell back to 186 of 1,013 (18.36%). Those are large, honest cohorts rather than a lucky handful, and the trend is worth reading before you decide.

"NMC approved" is not a status that exists. NMC publishes no approved list of foreign universities and says so on its own study-abroad page, and the Embassy of India in Dushanbe repeats it: "the NMC does not approve or recognize any foreign medical institution for the award of medical qualifications." What decides your registration in India is whether your degree meets the FMGL-2021 criteria - 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English medium, and a qualification licensing you to practise in Tajikistan. Avicenna is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with FAIMER SCHOOL ID F0000842, and Tajikistan’s Health Ministry has confirmed the English medium and the licensure in writing to the Embassy. Check the duration clause yourself.

The Embassy of India in Dushanbe names four in its July 2026 advisory: Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, Khatlon State Medical University, the Medical Social Institute of Tajikistan and Tajik National University. It adds that the list is not exhaustive and implies no endorsement. Avicenna is the only one of the four with a substantial FMGE record, which is why it is the only one we run an admission page for; the others keep rows on our country guide with what is actually known about them.

There is no university-specific minimum. NMC requires a valid qualifying NEET score for every foreign MBBS admission - the 50th percentile for General and EWS, 45th for General-PwD, and 40th for SC, ST and OBC. The Embassy adds a detail students miss: your NEET result is treated as your Eligibility Certificate, and you must start the course within three years of the date it is declared. Not to be admitted. The university’s document checklist asks for no language certificate at all, and non-CIS foreign students are generally not enrolled in the Russian or Tajik-medium tracks. But the Embassy notes that foreign students are expected to reach a basic level in the local language as part of the curriculum, and that while it is not compulsory during the internship, functional proficiency is "highly desirable" for talking to patients and doing clinical work. Treat it as coursework you will actually use, not a formality.

The World Directory records two qualifications at Avicenna TSMU. The six-year General Medicine programme awards "Tabib"; the English-medium programme for citizens of India and Pakistan, running since 2008, awards "Bakalavr Meditsiny i Bakalavr Hirurgii" - literally Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, the same primary medical degree India calls MBBS. The World Directory adds that it "is an equivalent to the Doctor of Medicine in General Medicine degree" and that graduates are eligible for licensure in Tajikistan. For FMGE and NExT eligibility the name on the parchment is not what matters - the FMGL-2021 criteria are.

Dushanbe is Tajikistan’s capital and, as the Embassy of India puts it, the city where most of the country’s universities and medical institutes are located; the Embassy describes the law-and-order situation there as generally satisfactory. Its two standing cautions are worth repeating because they come from the Indian mission itself rather than from a brochure: be careful in public places late at night and around strangers, and expect extremely cold winters - Tajikistan is mountainous, and students are told to bring proper warm clothing and winter footwear.
