About Semey Medical University

Semey Medical University began on 1 September 1953 with the opening of a medical faculty, and its own history page records the founding decree the year before — both dates belong on the record, and we give you the university's own framing. It is public, legally a non-commercial joint-stock company, in the Abai Region of eastern Kazakhstan, and WDOMS records enrolment on a scale that matches: 1,189 admitted in 2021 against 1,168 graduated.

The admission route is unusually transparent for this market. Semey states that foreign citizens are admitted "on a competitive basis based on the results of the entrance exam (an introductory interview)", that the interview is conducted in English and includes biology and chemistry questions alongside an assessment of English, and that applicants must already be "fluent in English at least intermediate level" to reach the interview. It also publishes NEET cut-offs for Indian applicants — 134 general, 107 SC/ST/OBC — which very few universities do.

On FMGE, Semey has the second-largest record on this roster: 819 of 4,056 candidates have passed across the NBEMS reports, a lifetime rate of 20.19%, with 164 of 751 in 2024 (21.84%) and 151 of 727 in 2025 (20.77%). It is a stable rate on a large sample — below Astana, roughly level with South Kazakhstan, above Karaganda. One thing we will not repeat from other sites: Semey is often described as a radiation-medicine research centre, and we could not find that claim supported on the university's own pages, so we leave it out.

Semey Medical University is one of the four universities on our Kazakhstan roster — see the full MBBS in Kazakhstan guide for the country-level picture, including why the two best-known names are not on this roster.

MBBS Fee Structure - As Published by the University

The university's own published figure, in the currency it prints. We do not convert at a rate we picked, and we do not add up multi-year totals the university itself does not publish.

Tuition: USD 4,100 a year (the university's estimate)

Semey prints USD 4,100 a year, but it prints it inside an approximate-expenses block for international students rather than as a contract tuition price, and states no academic year against it. The university does maintain a signed tenge tariff for foreign students; because the two are published in different places and different currencies, we treat the 4,100 as an indication and get the current contract figure in writing before anyone pays. Its accommodation line in the same block reads "from USD 800 a year", again an estimate.

Accommodation: Dormitories exist and are university-run — the history page records dormitory No. 1 built in 1956, and the news feed carries current items about it — but no room tariff is published anywhere on the university's site. The only figure it prints is "from USD 800 a year" inside its approximate-expenses estimate. We get the current rate in writing rather than repeat an estimate as a price.

English requirement: No IELTS or TOEFL certificate is required. Semey admits foreign citizens on an entrance interview conducted in English, which itself assesses English level, and it weighs your final school grades in English. Its own wording is that applicants must be "fluent in English at least intermediate level" to be admitted to the interview. It publishes NEET cut-offs for Indian applicants — 134 for general category, 107 for SC/ST/OBC.

Note: Fees can change by academic year and are set by the university, not by us. Always confirm the current figures with A.J Trust before making any payment.

How it works at Semey Medical University, specifically

  • Admission is by an entrance interview conducted in English, which assesses English proficiency alongside biology and chemistry — no IELTS or TOEFL certificate is asked for.
  • The university expects applicants to be "fluent in English at least intermediate level" before the interview.
  • It publishes NEET cut-offs for Indian applicants: 134 general category, 107 SC/ST/OBC. NEET remains mandatory under NMC's FMGL-2021 rules regardless.
  • Final school grades in English are weighed in the decision.
  • Tuition and accommodation figures on the university's site are approximate-expense estimates — get the contract figures in writing before paying.

Why Study MBBS at Semey Medical University?

No Certificate to Chase

Admission is on an interview held in English, which assesses your English itself. No IELTS band, no test booking, no three-month wait.

Published NEET Cut-Offs

134 for general category and 107 for SC/ST/OBC, printed by the university. Almost nobody in this market publishes a number you can check yourself against.

A Stable Rate on a Large Sample

819 of 4,056 lifetime (20.19%), 164 of 751 in 2024 (21.84%), 151 of 727 in 2025 (20.77%) — three consistent readings, not one lucky year.

We Flag Its Own Fee Caveat

The USD 4,100 it prints sits in an approximate-expenses block, not a contract price list. We get the contract figure in writing instead of repeating an estimate as fact.

One Claim We Dropped

Other sites sell Semey on a radiation-medicine research heritage. We could not source that on the university's own pages, so it is not on this one.

Country

Kazakhstan

Semey sits in eastern Kazakhstan's Abai Region, a smaller city than Astana or Almaty, and the university has taught medicine here since 1953. Its dormitories date back to 1956 and are still in use, though the university publishes no room tariff — one of the details we get in writing for you rather than guess at.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about MBBS at Semey Medical University

Semey prints USD 4,100 a year, but it prints it inside an approximate-expenses block for international students rather than as a contract tuition price, and gives no academic year for it. Accommodation appears in the same block as "from USD 800 a year". Because those are estimates rather than a signed tariff, A.J Trust obtains the university's current contract figures in writing before you commit to anything.
