About Astana Medical University

Astana Medical University opened in 1964, when the city was called Tselinograd, and its WDOMS record still carries the whole renaming chain — Tselinograd State Medical Institute, Akmola State Medical Institute, Akmola State Medical Academy, Kazakh State Medical Academy, and JSC Astana Medical University until 2019. It is a public institution (legally a non-commercial joint-stock company) at 49A Beibitshilik Street, and WDOMS records that clinical training makes up 50–74% of the programme.

For an Indian applicant the number that matters is the FMGE record, and Astana's is the strongest of the five Kazakh universities we track. In the NBEMS 2024 report 149 of its 416 candidates passed — 35.82%, against a 25.80% all-country average and a 25.13% Kazakhstan average. Across all reports it stands at 448 of 1,476, or 30.35%, and the 2025 report held at 135 of 447 (30.2%). That is a consistent record rather than one good year, which is what separates it from universities whose rate swings by fifteen points between reports.

The university runs several tracks and it is worth knowing which one you are joining: WDOMS lists a 6-year General Practitioner programme (from 2020), a 7-year one (from 2016), and a 5-year Bachelor of General Medicine that carries an explicit warning — "this 5-year program does not include clinical training. Graduates must complete an internship to be guaranteed licensure from their country's respective medical council." For FMGL-2021 purposes the internship matters, so confirm the track in writing. The 6-year programme was accredited for five years by ECAQA on 27 June 2024, and per WDOMS graduates have been ECFMG-eligible since 1964.

MBBS Fee Structure - As Published by the University

The university's own published figure, in the currency it prints. We do not convert at a rate we picked, and we do not add up multi-year totals the university itself does not publish.

Tuition: 3,000,000 KZT a year

Astana publishes its price list openly: 3,000,000 tenge a year for Medicine taught in English to foreign citizens, 2026–27, on both amu.edu.kz and its admissions portal. The same table prices the Kazakh/Russian-medium track at 2,800,000 and the domestic rate at 2,280,000. The portal adds a footnote worth knowing — the first-year price is held for that intake in later years — but it reserves the right to revise it "in the established manner", so treat it as a policy, not a guarantee. The list is tuition only; nothing about hostel, insurance or visa fees is included. We publish the tenge figure the university prints and do not convert it — ask us for a current rupee estimate at the day's rate.

Accommodation: Published and precise, in tenge for a nine-month period rather than a year. First-years are housed in Student House No. 3 on Abay Avenue at 315,000 KZT for nine months; senior students go to Houses No. 1 and 2 on Zhenis Avenue at 225,000 KZT for nine months. Rooms can only be booked after your enrolment documents are filed with the admissions committee, through the university's Platonus system, with a three-working-day decision.

English requirement: Astana is one of the two universities on this roster that publishes Kazakhstan's national certificate rule on its own admission pages, verbatim: entry to English-medium Healthcare programmes is by interview, held only where the applicant holds IELTS Academic 5.0, TOEFL iBT 35, TOEFL ITP 417, TOEIC 550 or Duolingo 80. It is certificate AND interview, not either/or — the interview runs 15–25 minutes and can be taken online. One caution: the ten-item document list on the admissions portal FAQ does not mention the certificate at all, while the linked rules PDF does. Work from the rules PDF.

Note: Fees can change by academic year and are set by the university, not by us. Always confirm the current figures with A.J Trust before making any payment.

How it works at Astana Medical University, specifically

  • Entry to the English-medium track needs one of five certificates — IELTS Academic 5.0, TOEFL iBT 35, TOEFL ITP 417, TOEIC 550 or Duolingo 80 — plus a 15–25 minute interview, which can be taken online.
  • NEET is mandatory for Indian applicants under NMC's FMGL-2021 rules; the university's own document list names the NEET certificate for Indian citizens.
  • The admissions portal FAQ omits the English certificate that the linked rules PDF requires — work from the rules PDF, not the FAQ.
  • Confirm in writing which track you are joining: the 5-year bachelor carries a WDOMS warning that it includes no clinical training.
  • Hostel rooms can only be booked after enrolment documents are filed; first-year applications run 11–25 August.
