About Tbilisi Medical Academy

Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy has been teaching medicine since 1992 — older than Georgia's private-university boom by two decades, and second only to DTMU (founded 1989) on our roster. The Doctor of Medicine (MD) English programme runs 6 years and 360 ECTS; WDOMS records English-medium instruction here since 2012, and NCEQE, Georgia's quality-enhancement centre, most recently accredited the English programme on 13 July 2020. The academy has over 1,100 students from 50 countries, by its own count.

TMA's defining habit is publishing things other universities leave vague. Its international-student tuition page itemises the full cost of attending — tuition, registration, reservation, insurance — and then goes further than any other university on this roster: it publishes its own monthly living estimates for Tbilisi, down to transport. It also names all 28 partner clinics where students rotate from Year 4, including the Gudushauri National Medical Center, the S. Khechinashvili University Clinic, the Todua Clinic and the Tbilisi Heart Center. Per WDOMS, graduates are ECFMG-eligible from 1992 onward and the school meets the Intealth Recognized Accreditation Policy.

The FMGE record is the roster's most modest, and we publish it anyway: 295 of 1,102 TMA candidates have passed lifetime (26.77%), with 90 of 280 in 2024 (32.14%) and 71 of 274 in 2025 (25.91%) — around the 2024 all-country average of 25.80%, below SEU, DTMU and GAU. If a strong FMGE record is your first filter, compare the numbers on this page against theirs; if cost certainty and an established school matter more, TMA's published charge sheet is the most complete on this roster.

Tbilisi Medical Academy is one of the five universities on our Georgia roster — see the full MBBS in Georgia guide for the country-level costs, eligibility rules, and how these five compare.

MBBS Fee Structure - As Published by the University

Every figure below is the university's own published number, in USD.

ChargeAmount (USD)
Tuition per year$7,000
Registration fee$300, one-time on enrolment
Reservation$2,100, paid before enrolment confirmation
Medical insurance$7–25 a month, required before the semester begins
6-Year Tuition Total$42,000

TMA publishes its full charge sheet on its own international-student tuition page — the only university on this roster that itemises everything: $7,000 tuition per academic year, a $300 one-time registration fee on enrolment, a $2,100 reservation paid before enrolment confirmation, and mandatory insurance at $7–25 a month. The page carries the university's own caveat: "Tuition fees may vary. Rates are subject to annual review by the registrar."

Accommodation: TMA states plainly on its tuition page: "TMA does not operate dormitories" — its Student Services team helps students choose accommodation instead. Unusually, the university publishes its own monthly living estimates for Tbilisi: accommodation $250–600 (dorm or private apartment), food and groceries $100–200, transport $15–30, personal expenses $50–150.

Note: Fees can change by academic year and are set by the university, not by us. Always confirm the current figures with A.J Trust before making any payment.

Tbilisi - City at a Glance

Population

~1.37 million (Geostat, 1 Jan 2026)

Climate

Milder than most of Eastern Europe - short winters, hot summers

Country

Georgia

Tbilisi is Georgia's capital and by far its largest city — about 1.37 million residents as of January 2026, per Geostat, the national statistics office. Every university on this page is in Tbilisi, and so are their partner hospitals, so students spend all six years in one city. The city runs a two-line metro and an extensive bus network, and English is widely understood at the universities and larger clinics. Indian students are a visible community here: the eight Tbilisi universities in our FMGE dataset sent 2,415 candidates to the exam in 2025 alone.
